Downtown to Get Bowling Alley

Downtown to Get Bowling Alley

(Cincinnati) -- The term "bowling alley" may evoke visions of 50's decor, tobacco-stained walls, low ceilings and grandma's Saturday league.  The owner of the Spare Lounge wants to bring the past-time into the 21st Century.

Jeff Sosna, of Midwest Hospitality Group, is building a four-lane bowling lounge on 7th Street, between Vine and Walnut.  The space housed the Play nightclub, which closed earlier this year.  Before that, it was the Lodge Bar.

Sosna says their emphasis will be on the lounge, and not the bowling.  He says they're not necessarily for the serious bowler, but trying to create a fun place for after-work, evenings, corporate events, and the like.

He says small bowling lounges have taken off in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, and as a native Cincinnatian, he thought it was time for Downtown to have one.  Midwest Hospitality Group owns Local's sports bar, next door, and Sosna says he wanted to do something different from the usual bars, and nightclubs.

The décor, Sosna says, will be contemporary, with LED screens, and big screen TVs.  There will also be a glass-floored platform over the lanes, for people to watch the bowling balls go by.

Like a lot of alleys, they'll rent you the shoes, and they'll have bowling balls.  Sosna says they'll have a co-ed league night, but just once a week, and only for fun.

The Spare Lounge is expected to open by the end of September.
