Members of the Ohio Hospital Association can breathe a sigh of relief when they read the latest piece by Michael Cannon in National Review Online, Obama’s Damaging Admission. Mr. Cannon informs us of a little known fact that could have big consequences for the Medicaid expansion debate here in Ohio.
Acknowledging that Obamacare has not reduced the uninsured, President Obama has rescinded cuts to disproportionate share hospital payments in his recent budget. DSH payments compensate hospitals for providing care to those without health insurance.
Hospitals had been using the DSH cuts as their primary argument for Medicaid expansion. They maintained they could not remain profitable without these funds and would need to close. The only solution, we were told, was to funnel more federal dollars into the Ohio health care system by way of Medicaid expansion. Now that their crying poor defense has been removed, it will be interesting to see what tactic, if any, the hospital lobby takes to advocate for expansion.
Ohioans should not sit back and wait for the answer. Mr. Cannon’s article should be sent to every Republican State Senator so that they fully understand the games that are being played when the hospital lobby begins their barrage of phone calls. These calls are sure to come now that the Medicaid expansion debate has moved to the Senate.
