If you want a good varnished finish, make sure the environment is dust free. That means if you have been sanding, make sure your clothes and the brush you are about to use are dust free. 

Use a vacuum to remove dust from the floor and wood; make sure the dust is not being blown into the air of the room that you are working.

When applying the varnish, use a light that will produce a glare on the working surface. This will allow you to see any runs or sagging in the clear finish.

A bristle brush will allow for slight ridges in the varnish.  Using a foam brush will leave ridges on the edge of the foam brush.  Slight thinning and brushing out the varnish will help solve this problem.  Eliminate air bubbles in the finish by never shaking a can of varnish before application. 

Here is your at home tip for today.  Carpet can be expensive so keeping it well-maintained is important.  Here are a couple tips for you to use around your house.

Make sure to remove any spots and stains quickly from the carpet by blotting with a cotton cloth. Always repair any rips, holes or unraveling in the carpet.  Make sure the carpet is always tight. If not, have it tightened down. Use carpet mats by entry ways to diminish dirt and grime to the surface of the carpet.  Avoid getting the carpet soaking wet.

Vacuum the carpet at least once a week; more often when children are in the house. Have the carpets cleaned twice a year to remover grit and ground in dirt which shortens the life of the carpet.

Another good idea is to keep pets out of the carpeted areas of your home.

Whether you’re setting a post for a deck, playset or a new fence there is a right and wrong way to do that job. The right way may require a bit more work. First, dig a hole three times wider than the width of the post. Dig the hole so that it goes deeper the frost line in your area.  Fill the bottom of the hole with 6 inches of course gravel.  You can now set the post in the hole. Secure the post with a cut 2 by 4our when the post is plumb.  You can now mix the Concrete mix and fill the hole to about 3 inches from the surface. You now back fill or place sod on top of the pour once it has dried.
