It’s co-plants of the week, featuring Chickweed and Hairy Bittercress! Why these two for plant of the week in January? As the snow has melted away, these beauties are a lush green, having started growing last fall. These are winter annuals (along with henbit). The seeds start to germinate in the fall, they lay low and grow when days are warm enough to grow, maybe even die back a bit in extreme cold, but as soon as the weather warms just a tad in late winter, they take off like crazy! Their goal – grow, flower and seed as quickly as they can...like before you get the energy to get outside and do something about them. So, how to control them? In open beds, pre emergent in the fall and spring to stop seeds from growing, and eliminate growing plants before they flower and throw seeds. And yes, ole Hairy can toss them about 6-8 feet! (In the lawn, its simple – thick lawn, no chickweed or henbit, and less hairy. He can be a little more persistent. By the way, did I mention these weeds are edible? Could be another way to get rid of them...just saying!

-Spathiphyllum or Peace Lily…definitely a favorite easy to grow indoor plant with its shiny green foliage, and wonderful white flowers that keep coming on year round.

-Dieffenbachia, or Dumb Cane...colorful wide leaves, and tolerate a wide range of conditions.

-Dracaenas...probably 40-50 varieties to choose from...narrow foliage, wide foliage, variegated foliage...and all tolerate a wide range of conditions especially lower lighted areas.

-Spider Plants…now tell me, who hasn’t had a hanging basket of spider plants at one time in their life?

-Pothos...vining plants that have been around forever and truly easy to grow.

-Chinese Evergreens...tough, durable, easy to grow, and not bad looking as well!

-Philodendrons...again many selections in this group including the ever popular selom.

-Sanseveria or Mother in Laws tongue…trust me, just about anyone can grow this plant.

-Ficus, including Rubber Trees...probably two of the most popular larger growing indoor plants.

-And the top indoor air purifier and fairly easy to grow indoor plant…Palms...from Ponytails to Parlor Palms...with their exotic textured foliage creating a tropical and relaxed feeling, all the while helping to clean the indoor air.
